Clay was kind enough to clear it with the Rec. Center - we will work on some swimming merit badge requirements this week (the fun ones)! We will meet at the church at 7:00, as usual, and head over to the JL Sorenson Recreation Center after opening exercises. You will need to bring a swimsuit and your Rec. Center pass. If you don't have a pass, I'll cover you. Class A or B uniforms are acceptable.
If you have your swimming merit badge, you can play around in the pool area doing whatever you want.
If you don't have your swimming merit badge, in addition to the uniform and swimsuit you will need to bring shoes, socks and jeans - make sure its okay to get them soaked before bringing them.

Pine Tree POW WOW - Class A or B Uniforms Required
We are going to do a couple houskeeping things this week. First, we need to plan our annual Christmas fundraiser. We'll get guys working on that tonight. Second, we need to register boys for the first of two district-sponsored merit badge events - the annual Super POW WOW.
The POW WOW enables Scouts to earn three merit badges through the course of January at a total cost of $12. I'd prefer this not to come out of the 2012 Ward Budget, so please make every effort to provide the funds for your boys. We will register them tonight, and they must attend all three Saturday events in January to earn the badges (7th, 14th, and 21st - 8am-12pm). If they don't attend every day, they will only earn partial merit badges.

Happy Thanksgiving
There will be no Scouts this week - enjoy Thanksgiving-eve with your family and let me take a moment to say thank you. Thank you for all your participation; for the good memories and the lessons learned. Thank you for choosing the right and for taking your Aaronic Priesthood duties seriously. Thank you parents, for your support in the program and your unyielding examples of righteousness for your boys.

It's getting cold! Time to break out the winter gear. (Class A or B uniforms)
This week we will meet at the Church at 7:00 pm to learn more about cold weather camping and a few outdoor tools we have available to us. We are lucky here in Utah to have all four seasons to camp in, and some of the most memorable moments for our Troop have come from outdoor events in January and February. Let's learn how to take advantage of these opportunities safely.
Time permitting we will also begin making plans for 2012.

End Of The Summer As We Know It (and we feel fine) - Sunday Dress
We cap off the official end of Summer over the next couple weeks.
First (9/7) with out Stake General Priesthood Meeting. We will meet at the Stake Center at 7:00 pm - Sunday dress. This will be a great time for father and son priesthood bearers to recieve guidance directly from the Stake leadership.
Second (9/14) will be prep for the annual Red/Blue overnight camp. That's right - for now the Utah / BYU rivalry is still very much alive. Last year we had football in the snow, a Madden tournament, and watched the game on a very big screen. What will you plan for this year? Who will win?
Unfortunately, I will be out of town for the planning and the overnight portion of the camp. I leave Friday (9/9) and will not return until laaaate on the 16th. In my absence, please work with Spence Hansen and John Finaly Jr. for all scout related questions.

Group Huddle - Class A or B Uniforms Required
We will be meeting at the Mack's house at 7:00pm for scouts this week. We have a pretty full agenda and will have the Webelos joining us for a good part of it, so wear your uniforms (if not because I asked, then to set a good example for the Webelos).
We have elections, flag construction (way cool), planning for Yuba Lake and leadership training. See you there.

This week we will be meeting at the Church at 7:00 pm to perform Friends of Scouting collections. We will be going door to door, so water is a good thing to bring along with that happy face. Dads, if you have time to help us with the routes it will make a big difference.

We will be meeting at the Church at 7:00 pm Wednesday and heading over to the Shannon's house to plop a canoe in their pool. We will begin some of our planning for August (busy month!) and throw in a few water games too. Don't forget to bring a towel, swim suit, and thanks for the Shannons.

Sink or Swim - Class B Uniforms
This week we begin our Canoeing and Boating theme and prepare for Summer Camp by doing our swim test (and general horsing around). We will be doing this at the new Recreational Center, and they suggest we come on Saturday before noon. So, rather than meet on Wednesday at the Church, we will meet on Saturday at 9:00 am at the Mack’s (6044 W Intrigue Drive). Bring your swim trunks and $4 (unless you have a membership).
If you can’t attend you will have to arrange with one of the Scoutmasters to test before any water events and/or Summer Camp or you will not be able to participate.

Geocaching (rock on) ; Camping (not so much)
This week we will be meeting at the Church at 7:00 pm to learn about geocaching and gps navigation. We will have a guest instructor and it should be a pretty good time. Unfortunately Jason Mack will not be attending. Instead he will be up with the 14-18 year old youth for their summer Youth Conference.
Consequently, we will not be holding an overnight camp on Friday as scheduled. This means that our next camp is the Bear Lake Aquatics Base summer camp at the end of July. Only one scout has submitted his health form. Remaining attendees will need to submit theirs or they will not be able to go.

Quick change of plans from what you may have heard announced on Sunday. Instead of Geocaching, we will be going to the Jordan River Temple. Goblin Valley - three years in the making (Class B Uniforms)
Well, our first two-day camp is upon us - and after three years of unsuccessful attempts we are actually heading down to Goblin Valley. Because this camp is unique, we will be handling things a bit differently to prepare:
- Scouts attending camp should meet at the Mack's house at 7:00 pm Wednesday with the following:
- ALL camping gear and supplies (we will load up that evening so we can leave early) Please dress and supply for the following Forecast (hats and sunscreen - there is little shade)
- Permission slips (server is alive and working to download them ... sorry for the offline period)
- Camp payment ($20) if it has not already been submitted
- Scouts attending camp should return to the Mack's house at 7:45am the following day. We will be leaving promptly - its a long drive and if we hustle we have a chance to grab one of the first-come first-served sites within the park.
- Please bring your own lunch for the drive
- Don't forget to wear your class B uniforms
- We will return Saturday around noon
- Scouts not attending camp can enjoy an evening off

American Football - Class B Uniforms
We will meet at the church at 7:00 pm on Wednesday to continue our athletics theme. Football is the name of the game this week, so wear appropriate clothing. We will be running drills and then play touch football. It is likely that we will walk down to Butterfield Park for this.
Since we will be outside, dress warmly ... looks like a chilly evening is in store.

Basketball 101 - Class B Uniforms
We enter the Athletics phase of the schedule and will spend the next couple months expanding our knowledge of and trying out the following sports:
Basketball
Volleyball
Soccer
Football
Tomorrow is Basketball, and the boys will need to wear appropriate clothing. We will meet at the church at 7:00 pm. We may have to move it outside if we can't use the hoops there, which means we will finish up at the Mack's house (just north of the them actually, across Mirabella). If you have a basketball that can be used outdoors, please bring it.
Parents - if you or our son have experience with the last three sports on the list and want to teach the rest of us the finer points, please let Jason Mack know ASAP.

Not so ancient history
This week we will be meeting at the Church @ 7:00 pm. It's a coed activity, so no uniforms - though we still need to adhere to modest standards. We will be heading downtown to the LDS church museum for a tour, returning before 9:30.
Apologies for the late blog update.

Spring Cleaning
We will be doing our annual inventory and Spring cleaning this week. Meet at the Mack's at 7:00 pm and wear your Class B uniforms. We may be bouncing back and forth between the Mack's and the Church at different points - need to get all the gear in order.
If you have a tent or other Scout gear at home, please bring it.
IMPORTANT REMINDER - If your son is attending scout camp this summer and you have not paid yet, please provide me with the envelope no later than Friday or they will not be able to attend. If you are unsure whether or not the camp fee has been paid, please ask - I have a record.

We will be meeting on Wednesday @ 7:00 pm at the Mack’s house to review firearm maintenance and care, the agenda for our Friday camp, planning for our Goblin Valley camp next month, and perhaps a firearm related contest or two.
Friday we will be meeting at 3:00 pm at the Mack’s house to head out for Blackrock Canyon and our inaugural Camp Shoot. Be prepared for cool weather and moist conditions. This camp is open to all Scouts age 12-18 and we have a variety of firearms available. We will have three NRA certified instructors to provide additional training and ensure range safety for what should be a highlight of the year!
Age 12 & 13 – bolt action rimfire .22s and Shotguns (we will have 12g and 20g on-hand)
Age 14+ - everything available to the younger boys plus semi-automatic rimfire .22s, centerfire rifles (.223 and .308) and pistols (maybe).

Service Project Saturday
I love how the BSA teaches the concept of service. Its in the oath, the slogan and implied by the law. Its the foundation of the Patrol Method and a requirement for the Advancement Method. This week we are meeting on Saturday to perform a service project. We will meet at the Mack's at 8:30 am and be back no later than noon. We are heading back out to the west desert (BLM land) to do some cleanup and prep for next week's camp.
Scouts should dress in jeans, sturdy shoes (no open toes), and their class B uniform. I still have a few class B's at my house if you haven't picked yours up yet. Work gloves will help prevent blisters and we need as many shovels / garden rakes as possible.

Dog days of ... Spring?
We will be meeting for our monthly combined activity (coed) Wednesday at 7:00 pm at the church. Dress is casual. We have a K-9 unit coming to do some law enforcement demonstrations ... ought to be pretty cool.
Our camp this month will be on April 22 - 23. Fathers of scouts are welcome to join us - we could use a couple extra volunteers for range safety as the boys will be handling a variety of firearms.

5th Wednesday - Sunday Dress
Every once in a while we hit a month with 5 Wednesdays in it. Our current tradition is to turn this time over to the sponsoring organization to present a topic of its choice. This week, the Bishop and his counselors of the Rose Canyon 2nd Ward (sponsoring organization) of the LDS Church will take some time to discuss LDS missions, preparation for them, and what it means to be a good neighbor.
I believe this is co-ed, though I'm not 100% positive, and it will begin at 7:00 pm at the Church on Wednesday. Boys should wear what they would to church.

Big Apple and Big Guns
Unfortunately I'm in New York this week and will be unable to attend Scouts on Wednesday. I'm especially bummed because we are moving from ballistics into firearms and the boys will get to learn firearm types, operation, safe handling, and how to maintain them. It's important the boys attend if they want to shoot on our April campout.
The boys will be meeting at Tracy Cowley's house from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm - for real this time :). Please see the post from a couple weeks ago for address, directions, map - etc. Tracy is a detective for West Valley City and has a multitude of firearms for the boys to handle and experience - ask them about "The Judge" when they get home. No ammunition will be present.
We will also be meeting on Saturday at the Church at 9:00 am to drive around and pick up Scouting-for-Food bags from the neighborhood. Many hands make light work.

Ballistics and you
This week the boys begin the Shooting theme, which will carry over the next couple months. Tomorrow we will meet at the Mack's house at 7:00 pm to study ballistics with a West Valley City Detective (Tracy Cowely) and then head to his house to learn about relaoding ammunition (and maybe see his gun collection). In subsequent weeks we will get to handle firearms, bows and learn the appropriate safety precautions for each, but we start with the ammunition.
The boys will need to be picked up at Tracy's house at 8:30pm sharp ... he needs his beauty rest. His address is 6062 Trailview Way (801 509 1714; google map link below)

Scoutmaster Conferences and Summer Camp Merit Badges
We will be meeting at the Mack house (6044 w Intrigue Drive) at 7:00 pm this Wednesday. It's a game night while the boys and I review advancement progress and register them for summer camp merit badges. If you haven't selected merit badges yet, we will do that in real time.

Camping and Backpacking Fundamentals
We will be meeting at the Church on Wednesday at 7:00 pm, and we have a guest presenter who will teach us about camping and backpacking fundamentals. I'm especially interested in the backpacking portion myself.
Parents, don't forget that if your son is going to Summer Camp we still need merit badge selections - ASAP. Please give me a call if you need help with this.

Klondike Gear Check
We will be meeting at the Mack's house at 7:00 this week for our Klondike gear check and for leadership elections.
For Klondike, please bring your gear and permission slips tomorrow. (I've fixed the permission slip on the server so you should be able to download it). On Friday we will be leaving from the Church at 3:00 and returning by 3:00 on Saturday.
For elections, being absent doesn't exempt you. Anyone First Class or higher is eligible for election, with preference by age. We will elect a new Patrol Leader, Grubmaster, Historian, and Quartermaster.
I will also be handing out Blue Cards from the Pow Wow. Looks like we had quite a few merit badges earned and a few partials too. Hang on to these as your personal record of completion. They are irreplaceable.

A special thanks to all the parents who helped support today's snowshoeing event. We had a great time. The pictures are up on the server now, and I've reloaded the permission slip too, so hopefully you can access it. I tested access to all the other files and you should be good to go.

Winter Wonderland
We have a really 'cool' event planned for this week - snowshoeing and ice-caves! We will be driving up Big Cottonwood canyon to a place known by a select few mountain men, several forest animals, and Doug Bagley, where we will take a 3/4 mile hike (each way) to Doug's secret sledding wonderland. While there we will cook and eat lunch, learn about and build snow caves, and maybe get a little sledding in if there is time.
This is a winter event, so please make sure you follow the proper layering guidelines -
Synthetic base layer > wool or fleece warming layer > wind and waterproff layer
No tennis shoes - winter boots only

Activity Tonight
This is Melinda posting for Jason who is out of town this week and unable to access his blog. I have no idea what the activity is and honestly had no time to find out what it was. I recommend contacting Tanner Hart or Brother Finlay at 801-878-9800 for help regarding time and place. I do know it is a combined activity. Jason will be back next week and the posts will be more useful then. Sorry. Melinda

Parent's Night
Parents, we have a great night planned for you and your boys. Please arrive promptly at 7:00 pm at the Church tomorrow. We will be meeting in the rooms at the South end of the building. We have special guests from the District and the LDS church and an agenda that will take the full hour and a half.
I look forward to kicking off the new year with you and sharing all the exciting things your boys have planned, as well as answering any questions you may have and taking your suggestions to help this program be the best it can.
We have child care available on site for all ages of children, so please come as a couple and don't forget to bring your Scout!

Pow Wow Continues - Parent's Night Incoming
The Pow Wow will continue this week, with no Wednesday meeting planned. Like last week, however, we will be meeting on Saturday at 7:30 am for the Pow Wow. Its important to complete any homework that was assigned to you.
Next week (Wednesday the 19th) we will have our 2011 Parent's Night. There will be child care available, so parents please come as a couple. The boys will be working on creating their class B uniforms, and we will have district leaders on hand too - it's a must come for everyone!
Lastly, the 2011 calendar has been filled out, so browse away at the bottom of the blog for a sneak peek. While the calendar may need a few adjustments due to pending Ward events, you should feel pretty confident in it.
